Chelsea legend, Didier Drogba has proven yet again that age is no excuse for executing your game at best. The 40-year-old Ivorian football star helped Phoenix Rising win the Western Conference Championship with a 2-1 victory against Orange County.
With a solid win against Orange County, Phoenix will now be heading to a match against the Eastern Conference Champions, Louisville City on Thursday for the USL Cup. Drogba led with a 2-0 in the 73rd minute of the match. It wasn’t just Drogba who took Phoenix to victory; Chris Cortez and Kevon Lambert were just as deserving for the credit with their impressive tag team.
Koji Hashimoto of Orange County almost took a toll on Phoenix leading when he executed a move to reduce the deficit. Phoenix Rising didn’t let this get the best of their dynamic and went on to let Drogba grab the triumphant goal which perfectly capped off his last final. The Chelsea veteran’s contract is bound to end by the end of this November 2018.
It was back in April 2017 when the 40-year-old legend decided to join Phoenix Rising and eventually co-owned the club, being the first ever football player to play and own a club in football history.
Drogba gained popularity from his time at Chelsea where he was able to give the Club 164 goals in 381 games across two spells. Aside from his Chelsea display, he has also done some work and involvement with Le Mans, Guingamp, Marseille, Shanghai, Shenhua, Galatasaray, and Montreal Impact.
